Ullapool

Ullapool is in many ways the gateway to the last remaining unspoiled region of the UK. There are ferries (weather permitting) to Stornoway and the Hebrides and road links to Sutherland and the Flow Country in the north. Up to date ferry information can be found at www.calmac.co.uk the official Caledonian MacBrayne website.

First sight of Ullapool reveals a charming fshing harbour at the head of Lochbroom. Ullapool is a community in which tourism plays an important part, but by no means an overwhelming one. The village is the ideal base for those who wish to explore the real Highlands of Scotland. Ullapool is only a one hour drive north-west from Inverness, but is in the centre of an area described as one of the last wildernesses and unspoiled environments in Europe. It is an area of exceptional natural beauty, unsurpassed anywhere in Britain as evidenced by the fact that an area of land - The Geopark - has been designated of special beauty and scientific interest.

The village is well placed for day trips to, for example, fabulous pure white sand beaches such as Achnahaird, Oldshoremore, Balnakeil and remote Sandwood Bay, or visit the magnificent gardens at Inverewe or, perhaps, make the short ferry crossing to see the thousands of nesting birds on Handa Island.

Entertainment

The village hall plays host to many concerts and events, and visiting music, dance and theatre companies perform at the Macphail Centre theatre and other venues. Most of the local bars and hotels regularly stage live music from traditional Scottish to contemporary. Every few weeks the Screen Machine, a travelling cinema, offers a regular screening of film releases.

The Ullapool News published every Friday, includes a comprehensive listing of walks, talks and entertainment throughout the area.

Screen Machine

The Screen Machine mobile cinema is a concept unique in the British Isles. It consists of an articulated unit, the trailer of which expands and unfolds to provide a 101 seat self-contained cinema. The Screen Machine provides conventional up-to-date 35mm screenings of recent movies, with full digital surround sound, air conditioning, comfortable raked seating, and full disabled access. It can also provide video projection and conference facilities. Please see Hi-arts website for more details and showings.
